About Ripe Mentoring Pty Ltd

Empowered Tidda's Funded by CreateNSW & Aboriginal Affairs

Empowered Tiddas is a mentoring program specifically designed to address the gender gap for Indigenous girls and young women. It aims to increase school attendance, improve engagement, support Year 12 completion, and facilitate transitions into further study or employment. The program includes two-hour weekly group mentoring, cultural activities, arts and crafts, yarning circles, women's dance workshops, and provides participants with a cultural diary and Tiddas T-shirt.

Experienced Cultural Mentors

In the Empowered Tiddas program, cultural mentors are much more than just guides; they are the heart of the program, embodying the principles of personalized learning through their lived experience and deep connection to Aboriginal culture on the South Coast of NSW. Their role is pivotal in shaping the journey of each Tiddas, offering unique insights and fostering a strong sense of identity and belonging.

Personalized Learning

  • Individual Research Projects: Girls could choose to research their specific family's dreaming stories, local language groups, or significant historical events on the South Coast, culminating in presentations or creative works like art or song.
  • Mentorship Deep Dives: Mentors can work one-on-one with Tiddas to explore cultural practices that are most relevant to them, whether it's specific weaving techniques, traditional cooking methods, or local bush tucker.
  • Flexible Yarning Circles: While yarning circles are a core component, personalized learning could mean allowing girls to lead discussions on topics they feel most passionate about, ensuring their voice is genuinely heard and valued.

  • Project-Based Learning: Instead of tests, girls might demonstrate their understanding through projects that combine academic skills with cultural expression, such as designing a business plan for an Indigenous enterprise, creating a digital story about their community, or curating a local history exhibition.
  • Varied Learning Formats: Some Tiddas might thrive with hands-on activities, while others prefer digital modules or one-on-one discussions. Offering a range of formats ensures every girl can engage in a way that works best for her.
  • Celebrating Personal Milestones: Progress is recognized not just by academic grades, but also by achieving personal goals, mastering new cultural skills, or demonstrating increased confidence and school attendance.
